Insiders Analysis

LightReading has just published the results of their 2010/2011 Salary Survey.  Not surprisingly, things are “looking up” all around and most people in the industry see, at the very least, no pay cuts from their 2009 compensation.  Most people are chalking it up to a recovering economy.

Personally I think that’s only part of the story.

We also have to consider that from 2004-2008 there was a massive push towards Ethernet that echoed (faintly) the IP boom in the late 90′s.  From 2008-2010 we have seen a period where Carriers were planning the best way to take advantage of that new Ethernet Infrastructure.

Lynette Luna writes in an article in Fierce Broadband Wireless that pundits hailing the death of WiMax might be in for a surprise.  Her main argument is that new a number of carriers across the globe see WiMax as a potential transition technology towards the goal of a TD-LTE infrastructure.

I agree wholeheartedly with this assessment but I do believe there is another point to address.  In the end, the consumer always chooses what is best for him/her.  WiMax Carriers traditionally have “all you can eat” product offerings and they seem to go over well with consumers.

If Mobile carriers continue their pay-per-kilobit, bandwidth-constrained and roaming tariff practices, it just might be “the consumer” who makes WiMax happen.

Clearwire Spectrum Sale

by John McCann on October 13, 2010

According to Light Reading (among other sources) Clearwire is auctioning off their 40Mhz spectrum.  Pundits expect between $2.5-$5 Billion to be raised in the auction.

What on earth could the do with all that money…??

I have an idea!  How about building Clearwire Europe and driving the idea of the international flat-rate data plans down the throats of those carriers who won’t offer it.

The first Windows 7 based mobile handsets have entered the market according to a Telecom Paper report linked here.

Microsoft with their muscle and their marketing relationships have closed alot of contracts off with carriers across the world.  For them, this is the easy part.  Lets see if they can get out of their own way and produce something that consumers will like.  I’d really like to see Apple have more competition in this market.

Exorbitant Data-Roaming Fees

by Dan Prescott on September 28, 2010

To follow up on John McCann’s Blog Post “Mobile Bill Woes”, here is a link to what was said at the annual conference of European Telecommunications Network Operators Association (ETNO) “Europe cracks whip over ‘exorbitant’ data-roaming fees”. The European Commission wants the gap between roaming and domestic prices to approach zero.
